My Music Roots & Influences

I’ve always excelled at the arts - born with an expressive soul and a sensitivity to the impact words can have on people and the world. My mom put me in violin, guitar, dance and singing lessons, which helped me grow as a musician and realize my artistic potential.

Growing up, I witnessed the love my parents had for each other and how they persevered through life’s challenges. My parent’s relationship motivated me and inspired me to understand myself and others. I was determined to master how to express emotions and weave my life stories through words and music.

As a child, I turned to poetry, music, movies, books and writing as my creative outlets. I especially enjoyed writing skits, poems, monologues, short stories and songs. I developed a sense of humour that made people laugh and sometimes, poetry that made people cry. I remember the time I delivered a politically-charged, emotionally-driven performance at an Ottawa Slam Poetry contest. Everyone clapped and woo-ed. But, my intent was for freedom of expression and art, not so much for winning the competition. Music has become my core outlet. It’s my heart’s expression. What I feel, I write and if the words can turn into song, I add a melody.

I’m always reminded to keep producing music - to just get it out there and enjoy the journey. I’m picky and want my songs a certain way, so understandably, it took some time in the beginning. With continued perseverance, I know the rest of my songs will follow and I’m a stronger artist after each creation.
